Dhofar 700 (Dho 700)

The meteorite; Dhofar 700 (Dho 700) was found on November 15th during 2002 in the Dhofar region of Oman. It has been classified as a rare Achondrite meteorite, specifically; Diogenite. Only twelve (12) dark-greyish stones were found completing a small Total Known Weight of just 2.77kg. Fusion crust is generally absent with this meteorite however this specimen does look to have a few small patches of remnant crust. Terrestrial weathering is also not significant. In some of the stones, vesicles (gas pockets) are prevalent throughout the matrix and the specimen below looks to be one of these. Dho 700 has an equigranular (equal grains) texture, and consists dominantly of orthopyroxene which is visible as the small 'crystal-like' grains. This meteorite also contains rare Iron Hydroxide and the mafic silicates have the low Magnesium content that is a characteristic feature of Diogenites. The 29.20g specimen below is one of the twelve individuals found and is part of the Meteorites Australia Collection (MA.04.0077).
